NEET UG 2025 BDS: Expected Cutoffs & Admission Trends
As NEET UG 2025 approaches, BDS aspirants must understand how cutoffs (ranks/marks) are trending. In NEET 2024 the qualifying percentiles for BDS were 50% for General (around 163–144 marks for UR) and 40% for reserved categories. In practice, top dental colleges demand much higher scores. For example, Maulana Azad Dental Institute Delhi (50 seats, Govt) saw closing AIR ranks of ~26,503 in 2022 and ~23,578 in 2023, indicating cutoffs are rising (scores needed are increasing). Based on past data, we expect NEET 2025 BDS cutoffs to remain steep: typically, General category candidates need ~550–600+ marks (above 98 percentile) to get into Govt. dental colleges, while OBC/SC/ST have somewhat lower thresholds. Cutoff marks have been climbing (2023 cutoffs ~720–137 marks for Gen vs 715–117 in 2022), so aim high.
-
Key Trend: Government dental colleges often close below AIR ~30,000 for Unreserved (General) in Round 1. For instance, MAIDS Delhi closed at AIR 23,578 (Gen) in 2023. We expect 2025 Round-1 closing ranks for top BDS colleges around 20–30k. Corresponding cutoffs in marks will be around mid-500s (out of 720).
State-wise BDS Admission Outlook
Major dental hubs have wide variations in cutoffs. State counselling (85% state quota) cutoffs often differ from All-India seats. For example:
-
Uttar Pradesh (UP): The premier Govt. college KGMU Lucknow (Faculty of Dental Sci.) had closing state rank ~27,948 (AIR ~23k) for Gen in 2023. Other UP colleges (Lucknow, Kanpur, Meerut) admit up to rank ~1 lakh+ under State quota.
-
Bihar: Budha Dental Inst., Patna (Govt.) closed around State rank 7,797 (AIR ~1,135,443) for Gen in 2024. (Bihar’s two govt BDS colleges have modest cutoffs state-wise.)
-
Karnataka: Govt. Dental College, Bangalore (Bangalore RGUHS) closed at AIR ~38,499 (General) in 2023. Even private colleges like A.B. Shetty, Mangalore admit students up to AIR ~60k. Karnataka seats fill up quickly due to high seat count.
-
Tamil Nadu: TN Government Dental College, Chennai (100 seats) closed at AIR ~3,394 (Gen) in 2024 – extremely high competition. Major private colleges (Saveetha, SRM, Ragas) also have very high scores (often top few thousand marks).
-
West Bengal: Dr. R. Ahmed Dental College, Kolkata (125 seats) closed at AIR ~46,704 (Gen) in 2024. Burdwan Dental College (Govt.) closed ~53,220. Many private WB colleges close beyond rank 1–2 lakh.
-
Delhi (NCT): MAIDS (Delhi Univ.) is the top Govt. seat. It closed at AIR ~23,578 (Gen) in 2023. IGIDSR Delhi (MAMC) and other colleges have slightly lower cutoffs (around rank 30–50k).
-
Maharashtra: Top Government colleges Nair Dental (Mumbai) and GDC Mumbai/Nagpur filled at very high ranks. In 2024 Round 1, Nair’s Gen closing AIR was ~58,730. In Mop-up it eased to ~48,229. (See comparison below.)
-
Jharkhand: RIMS Dental (Ranchi) closed at AIR ~35,582 (Gen) in 2023. AIIMS-like ESIC Kuppam, private Jharkhand colleges close at much lower tiers.
Overall, state quotas often allow lower overall AIR ranks (e.g. a state topper might get a Govt seat with AIR~100k). But we have highlighted the toughest cases (Gen category, Round-1 AIQ).
Round-1 vs Mop-Up Cutoffs
BDS cutoffs improve (drop) significantly in Mop-up/stray vacancy rounds: fewer seats remain, so closing ranks are lower. Example (Maharashtra): Nair Dental College (Mumbai) General closed at AIR 58,730 in Round 1, but in the Mop-up round the closing rank was ~48,229. Similarly, many states see Mop-up cutoffs 10–20k ranks better. Aspirants should monitor Mop-up results if they miss Round 1.

Category-wise Cutoffs & Choosing the Best College
NEET BDS cutoffs vary by category: General/UR needs the highest scores, followed by EWS, then OBC/SC/ST. For example, at MAIDS Delhi in 2023 the closing ranks were Gen ~23,578 and OBC ~23,791 (nearly similar) but SC was much lower (~105,188). Reservation caps the cutoff gap – an OBC candidate often gets a seat at a rank ~10–20% worse than Gen, while SC/ST cutoffs are significantly lower. EWS (10% quota in Gen) also had cutoffs close to the Gen range in recent years.
How to choose a college: Consider your NEET rank, budget, home state and reservation:
-
If rank is very high (top ~10k AI), top Govt and Pvt colleges are options nationally.
-
If rank is moderate (e.g. 20–50k AI), target state quota seats in good Govt colleges, or sought-for private colleges with moderate fees.
-
Home State Domicile: Many state colleges reserve 85% of seats. For example, a Jharkhand student can get RIMS Ranchi at rank ~20k (state rank), whereas AIQ cutoff was ~35k.
-
Budget: Govt colleges have nominal fees (₹10k–₹2L total), while private colleges charge lakhs per year. Also account for capitation (Rs. donation) if choosing a private self-financed seat.
-
Preference: Research college facilities and placement. E.g. Saveetha Chennai is NAAC A+ and highly ranked (hence high cutoff but modern campus).
👉 Key Takeaway: Use the above cutoff data to shortlist colleges. For instance, a Gen-category student with NEET rank ~30,000 (AI) might target MAIDS (Delhi) or KGMU Lucknow (UP), or private colleges like Saveetha/Manipal if budget allows. An OBC/ST candidate can aim for Govt colleges with 10–20% lower cutoff. Always check the latest state counseling results and MCC rounds when they are announced.
